About the Primary Founder
Eric Epstein is a semi-retired Telecommunications and Systems Engineer. He is a partner and managing member of a few small businesses that include systems engineering, video production, online sales, and marine services.
Eric is a former U.S. Marine Corps officer, a licensed USCG 100 Ton Captain, and a volunteer STEM teacher. He volunteers for organizations such as; FIRST Robotics, Citizen Science, Engineers without Borders USA & UK, AAAS, IEEE, Charting Careers, and PSW Science.
Eric is an avid sailor, SCUBA Dive Master, world traveler and science buff. Eric can usually be found on his sailboat somewhere along the U.S. East Coast.
“I volunteer teaching science/STEM classes to young people. From middle school though young adults looking to learn about STEM, start a company or learn a trade. I teach classes in the U.S. and anywhere I travel. I have been teaching STEM in one form or another since my own children were in school. As a matter of fact, I have been teaching STEM longer than the term STEM has been in existence.
For the first 25 years, it was just me. I'd volunteer wherever I lived or traveled, visiting schools and talking to anyone interested.
As I moved to being semi-retired, I began traveling more and spending more time in other places. I have had more opportunities to teach, in places like; South Africa, Panama and the Bahamas. Along the way, I met a few 'like minded' mentors and teachers in various countries and I support them with tools; science kits, microscopes, computers and the video clips that I found useful for my STEM classes. This allows them to carry on with STEM. Thus came the creation of Traveling Science.
My primary goal is to encourage more young people to move towards a Bachelor of Science degree program. My theory is that by breaking down the wall of fear that has children intimidated by math and science, some young people will be more inclined to move in a more progressive direction in education and work. I’ve observed that as a few young people go into engineering that might not have otherwise, some others go to college that might not have, some go to trade schools to specialize that might not have, and some just finish high school that might have dropped out. Traveling Science is built around this basic concept that '“a rising tide raises all boats.””
